Celebrating my anniversary

So it has been one year since I started doing CrossFit.  One year, since I started eating normally again, one year since I started gaining muscle weight, one year since I stopped caring so  much about being skinny and started caring about being strong.  CrossFit has given me a lot over this past year.

My running, while I WAS still running, became faster.  I ran my Plattsburgh Half Marathon without running more than 6 miles at one time during the entire month and a half leading up to the event.  Even though I ran less, my legs were stronger and I ended up taking around 7 minutes off of my time.

I started eating normally again, which had been a struggle for me.  I went Paleo, which is a way of eating that a lot of people who do CrossFit eat.  I found that it really helped me to focus not on feeling bad about eating something that I considered “bad”, but on focus on eating better all around.  I just cut out dairy completely and I’ve stopped eating processed foods.  I mainly eat fruits, veggies, nuts, and meats, which basically means I can eat as much as I want.  I eat like all the time now, which is pretty amazing but the veggies fill me up and they are all pretty delicious.

What else, what else?  Oh when I first started, cleaning the 45 lb. bar was pretty impressive to me.  But this past week I hit a goal that I had made for myself at the beginning of the summer. I cleaned AND jerked 103 lbs. 10693412_531811883628899_1404660754_n I FINALLY broke the 100 lb. barrier on one of my Olympic lifts, which is something I’ve been working towards.  Yes, my name is Tall Sara at my box, and there’s another Sara and she is Small Sara.

I feel like I’m starting to feel REALLY comfortable, plus I have a routine now, which Stefan and I now joke that I’m there like every 10 hours, it is really true sometimes.  I’m there twice a day and I’m kind of a huge dork but it’s ok.

So there’s that for CrossFit.  Everything is still going well so far for school.  I’m still getting my work done on time, which is good.  And basically this week I’ve been kind of stressed so my goal is to get a lot of work done this week and then either start outlining this weekend or next weekend.

Plus, I’m going apple picking this weekend.  Which means that I will get to make applesauce! Boom shaka laka! So pumped!

Getting Pumped and learning to reach out

So I’ve been struggling this past week with eating and how I’ve been feeling- feeling kinda like I did last semester.  So that’s been something that I’ve been working on. 65c084ba2567d7186011944478f457a8 It’s going to be something I continue to work on for a long time to come I think.   Luckily, I have a lovely friend named Carla who understands- she understands completely.   We have a lot in common food-wise and she goes hard on working out like I do.  So basically we have started becoming closer and honestly its nice working out with her because she helps me to push myself.

So  yesterday was leg day.  My legs felt a little wobbly after we finished the workout 1 1/2 hours later…. but I was like alright not too bad.  Boy was I wrong!  after-leg-dayToday walking up and down the stairs is a legitimate workout.   I’m too busy trying to not miss or step or have my legs give out from underneath me while I walk down them to care how ridiculous I look.  It’s going to be a good day. Even though I am going to look ridiculous literally all day I love being sore after a good workout because I feel like I actually did something.  But that’s just me….

Basically, I’m getting/staying on track with my eating and working out.  I’ve somehow been juggling schoolwork, SGA, practice, and lifting these past 2 weeks so my goal is to pretty much keep that up. 634c1c41ef3069e443ea89f4167ab4f4 Did I mention that I’m sore today?  Because I am. So moving along from my soreness…

My friend Hollikins ran her first marathon yesterday. She ran the NYC Marathon and she did it in a little over 3 hours.  I can honestly say that I creeped on her by following her bib number on the NYC Marathon website.  I just want to give her a quick shout out to tell her Congrats! I’m so happy and proud!!   She kicked some major butt in my opinion and I hope that she isn’t too sore.

So basically that’s all I’ve got going on.  Oh before I forget, I PR’d in my 6k for this season by a whole minute.  I didn’t realize it until like 2 days after the race but my last 6k time was around 33:35 and my 6k time from this past weekend was 32:36.  So I’m pretty happy right now.  Even though my times weren’t where I wanted them to be this season I was still improving.  So with that I will leave you with a lovely Eminem song that I really like.

Ok blog peoples, I’m terribly sorry for the serious MIA the past few days.  But as I explained in the most recent blog post my computer has sadly pretty much died.  I’m waiting until Sunday/Monday to get it fixed *fingers crossed* so a continued hijacking of the family computer is happening.

Ok so now I’ll start with a quick blog recap of the past week and then I’ll move onto the present! Let’s start with last Thursday; trail run with ARE STRS.  The trail was super rocky and dangerous, one guy fell and we had to call an ambulance because he hit his head and needed stitches.  Luckily, he’s ok.  I saw him at this past trail run (not running), but walking and there for the cookout.  The stitches looked gross and horrible,but I guess he said was pretty good.  So yay! Hopefully he’ll be 100% soon.

Next, last Saturday my mom and I went to the Troy Farmer’s Market.  It encompasses a full street and then some, I think I’ve given my mom the Farmer’s market bug because she went cray cray spending money on a butt load of fresh food that we ended up making into a meal that night.  So yeah basically our whole meal was made from fresh, local food =win!

And I guess my family computer doesn’t like me enough to put my pictures where I ask so I guess they will all be at the bottom of the post…. Moving along.  I took a picture of our super awesome bounty of food.  Which included; mussels, chicken, vegetables, bread, cider, pesto, cheese, applesauce, and I think that’s it…. It was interesting because I’ve never bought meat at the farmer’s market because its really expensive.  But I managed to get a decent amount for like $8.  It’s definitely a once and awhile buy though.

Oh, I got lovely pink eye…. in both my eyes.  Yay me!  I’ve been on medication for the past week.  It’s all cleared up now, but it meant that I couldn’t put my head under the water at swim lessons, so I didn’t get any good swim workouts this week.

Tuesday; Colonie Relays which was fun my friends Eric and Abby ran the mile with me again.  I didn’t run it as fast as last week: 7:46, probably because I was barefoot and the track totally  tore up my feet a bit.  Lesson learned.  One thing that I thought was cool was that I got my first blood blister, weird thing to get excited about I know, but then again I’m odd.

Wednesday, I bought some black heels for work, they look super tall to everyone because I don’t ever wear heels, but I’m starting to.  And well, I fell down the stairs.  I didn’t get hurt, but my dad proceeded to make fun of me for the rest of the day and to tell me that I had to take back my shoes.  It wasn’t my finest moment to say the least.

Thursday’s ARE STRS run was very uneventful compared to last week.  I ended up doing around like 5 miles.  And it was cook out night, which was good because I wasn’t sure what I was going to eat for dinner.  There was music, and Josh- the guy who basically started it and is kinda amazing in my opinion.  If you can’t tell, I have a slight crush on the guy, it’s mostly because he runs… and he works for (started?) a race timing company, has an awesome body, amazing calves- Runner’s calves!  Anywho, Call Me Maybe came on and Abby and I jokingly were singing it to each other and he started singing into the mike his number… if only I had a pen!  Hahaha anyways, it was a good mileage night and a lot of fun!

That brings me back to today, Saturday.  I went to the farmer’s market again, mostly because my dad was begging me to buy him more pickles- he loves them! So I took the money my mom left me for food this weekend and spent it there plus a bit of my own money.  I didn’t spend much, but I try to spread out my purchases among a bunch of different stands so I can support as many people as possible.  Don’t worry I took pictures of this spread too! Now all that’s left of today is to get my stuff ready for my triathlon tomorrow and to go through all my rituals.  Come on, we all have our prerace rituals we have to do.  I am no exception.  I also have to get some work done and then relax.  I’m hoping to take like 5 minutes off my time from last year.  Plus, my friend Christine let me borrow her old road bike so I don’t have to use my mountain bike, I call that a win!  Don’t worry, if I have time tomorrow or sometime in the days after y’all will get a full update!  So that’s it for now, I shall end the post with a super photo bombing!

Lake Placid Marathon Recap.

Ok so sorry it’s been a few days after the marathon but things have been a bit hectic, but I will explain that later.  So I shall start at the beginning and go to  the end.   Sunday morning started off with a lovely wake up alarm at 3:30 am.  I kid you not.  This is what I like to call my ‘I just got up, don’t expect much’ face.

As we can all tell…. Not pretty.    But after a lovely hot cup of coffee with a bit of food in me I quickly turned into;

 a very serious Sara.  It’s my; “It’s 4:40 in the morning, do you know where your kids are‘ face.  Personally, if I had kids I’d be wondering where they were, but I don’t so I don’t care.

But let’s get for reals.  I quickly got down to business and was pumping up my jams to get into the mood for my race.  Plus, I got to wake my mom and brother Tim, who would be coming with me, up at 4:50 in order to leave by 5:15.

So perky Sara is up and ready for action!

In between my eating, drinking coffee, and getting pumped up I remembered to write on my arms.  Remember how I mentioned before since I wasn’t going for time I wanted to write thinks I was thankful for on my arm? You don’t? Well you know now. Anywho, I had to use both arms.

This was the first 13 miles.  And the next 13.2 miles were done on the other arm.  The ones on my left arm didn’t come out quite as neat as these ones, mostly because I’m not left-handed. 
Anywho, I found during the race that they turned out to be very good motivators for the first 1/2 but I managed to get sidetracked during the second 1/2 to the point that I wasn’t focusing on what I’d written quite as much.  So here’s the second 1/2;

As you can see I have a lot of motivation, and truthfully during the race the writing was smudged and sort of sweated off.  But I shall not dwell on my nastiness.  Moving along…

The car ride was pretty much uneventful.  All I really did was eat a bit more food, drink some water, and tape my feet to keep my blisters from rubbing raw and bleeding again.  Look at my handiwork;

Anywho, we got to Lake Placid a tad before 6:30, because I’m anal retentive and made sure we left on time/early for the race.  Plus, this way we found a lovely parking spot, the registration, and most importantly- the bathrooms!  I shall now show you some scenic shots of the area where the start/finish was.  It was right next to the Olympic center in Lake Placid.

This was actually in the outdoor speed skating oval. They had the last tenth of a mile on this track.  And in the center green were the registration tent, medical tent, massage tent, and food tent.  All very important once you finish.  Alas, I would not see the Finish again for several hours once the race started.  

Personally, I really enjoyed seeing the flags of all the other countries up around the oval.  But I digress… I checked in and got my number on, my number to marathon greatness!

Or I guess you could say number 31.  But that’s besides the point.  My mom and brother Tim did a great job of creepily following me around all day.  Which was very nice of them considering they could’ve gone to the beach or done some shopping.  Instead they decided to stalk me and keep me motivated and for that I am extremely grateful.  But we shall move on to their stalker-esc type pictures now. 

I think this is between miles 2 and 3, no wait.. I’m sure this is between miles 2 and 3.  I was still feeling good so I was smiling.  You know how misleading long runs are into making you feel fantabulous.  
Depending upon what loop this was I’m thinking either mile 5 or mile 14.  But it’s a toss up as to which loop so I don’t really know. 

When I get really delirious or in pain I like to make faces at people to distract myself.  Or to scare people away.  It depends. 

Oh lord! This is my main man and I.  he’s in the green shirt running next to me.  We legit became Besties during this marathon, we ran together for at least 6 miles and I learned his life story.  Haha I loved him! I never caught his name but he was straight up adorable and he kept me motivated which was nice.  

Sidenote time: My mom ran with me from mile 14-15, which was awesome cuz I was in a bad place mentally at that point and really needed that boost from my mom.  Well at the end of the race my brother came and found me with a mile left to go.  He came up next to me and asked: “May I have the honor of running this last mile with you?”  I almost starting crying it was so sweet.  So he helped keep me going to the end, which was nice because the last mile was pretty much all uphill, the race organizers just like to torture me. 

I don’t have any of my official finish right now, depending upon when the official pictures from the race are ready I’ll have some later.  But my mom took this after I finished.  My brother gave me a huge hug, which was nice because it kinda kept me standing to be honest.  Then of course what’s the first thing I want to do?  Well eat of course!

Another Sidenote: I have a book that I write in all the things I want to accomplish before I die.  Well, I was looking through it before this weekend and I found #201. Run a marathon.  Well I’m happy to say that that goal has now been checked off, take a look for yourself; 

So that’s pretty much it for my epic journey of a marathon.  I ended up running it in 5:43:17, which I’m pretty proud of considering I learned after that it was one of the hardest courses not only because of hills, but because of elevation change.  So I figure if I can run/complete this marathon I can run/complete any marathon. 

Besides that, I won’t lie- I walked a bit during this race and I’m completely ok with it.  If you’re not, oh well, I don’t care.

Oh and I might have a stress fracture because hey when I run a marathon I do it right. 😛 

And I’d like to take a moment to say that my friend Justin was right, this was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done both physically and mentally.  I hit a lot of low points during the race and I’m damn proud of myself for not quitting.

But I won’t worry about that till I see the Dr.  for the rest of this week its rest. Both because I want to and because I have to. 
You see I had eye surgery on Monday to take care of a droopy eye lid I’ve had for over a year now.  Hence why I didn’t blog about my race yesterday.   Because well… this is what I looked like; 

Yes I am smiling even though I can only see out of one eye.  Why? You ask, well that’s because I like the nickname Cyclops.

Anywho, I got the bandage off today and so I shall show you a picture of me today.  It’s not to bad, a bit swollen and bruised but that is to be expected. 

So that is all I believe I have to say.  I think I’ve talked myself out for now and I hope all y’all are appropriately satisfied since you had to wait a few extra days for the recap.

On summer vacation running.

I’m having the most fun running right now.  Since I’ve started summer break I’m not as busy with 50 bagillion things (yes that is a real number) so I have time to run whenever I want.  I would very much like to emphasis the word whenever.   Because it’s kinda a glorious word, I’m just saying. So pretty much the majority of my days go as follows; wake up, watch tv/movies, knit, putz around, eat, and then run whenever.  It’s glorious!  I’m enjoying running for however long/short I want because I don’t have to micromanage when I can run.  I mean relatively yes.. as in morning or night or hmmm maybe even go crazy and do the afternoon! But besides that I don’t have to have a specific time. 

This is my foot.  It’s kinda crooked,but I think y’all can deal.  I decided to take a picture of its gloriousness after the first half of my run.  This is because it represents something else I love about summer…..barefoot running! I have to recallus my feet again so I only did a mile, but I have missed it and it felt wonderful.  My friend Bonna and I are barefoot runners, she is far more than I am.  Her feet are like rawhide! I love her though and her ridiculously hard feet.

That brings me to my next point which has nothing to do with feet or running, so this segway is sorta a segway in itself, but I digress…

I am up for a little next semester! Yes I know I’ve been quite cranky lately about my sorority, but I mostly was having a rough patch and God bless those girls because they put up with me.  So things are going better and speaking of going better I had a lovely impromptu Skype date with my pledge sis/triplet Amanda tonite.

She is quite lovely.  I took like 5 pictures of her without her knowing then she figured it out and made me take a good picture.  Regardless, I love her so it’s ok. Even though she’s weird…. but then again I am too so I guess it’s ok.

Anywho, I am up for a little which means I’ve started getting my Big/Little stuff ready for whomever the lucky girl will be.  And one of the first steps in that is fabric!  To cover her book and for her to get letters once she makes me a Big/Little pillow.  Speaking of, I need to make my Big one, which I figured I should do before I get a Little so I got fabric for that too. My Big’s favorite color is blue so I found a really pretty one.

The light blue is for my little, the darker blue is for my Big.  The pink… well that’s for my Big’s pillow but it’s also for me and projects I need it for.  But that’s because I love pink to the highest degree.

Anywho, those two things are on my list of to-do’s for this summer.  Thank God summer has only just begun- I’ve already got so much to do! 

Which another thing is my quilt.  I make random squares of yarn using different patterns and such just to test my skills or the yarn.  And I usually end up adding it to my work-in-progress quilt.  So my goal this summer is to add more to it and maybe make it an actual useable length.  Right now it’s sorta a smallish square.  So those are some of my non-running related goals for the summer.  I figured I’d throw them in here while it was still early because as the summer progresses and I get more into races and training that will probably end up being the main focus of a lot of my blog posts.  So I believe I have exhausted myself for the night and I have a busy day tomorrow.

I’ve Figured Out the Secret

So I’ve figured it out.  What, you ask?  Well, I’ve finally figured out why I’ve felt so *crappy* while running on the treadmill.  Since I’m running in place I concentrate too much on the time/mileage compared to when I run outside when I can just soak up the surroundings.  So my new rule on the treadmill is this: don’t look at the time/mileage. Simple enough right? Exactly, plus now I’m just honing my hard-core creeper skills as I watch people work out in the gym while I run.  I’ve decided that I’m going to try to get my creeper face to look like this: while I run.

I’m going to work on it and then get back to y’all.

Anywho, after my 3 meetings yesterday I managed to squeeze in some time to go for a quick swim.  I was very excited, mostly because I felt like I was having a FML type moment in my life, but also because I really love swimming.  Realistically, I don’t think I could ever really make it on the swim team here at school, but I just love swimming and it’s partially why I love triathlons; because I get to swim for the first part of the race. 🙂

Anywho, I only planned on doing a 500 yard swim, but once I got there and got in the pool I decided I definitely needed to go longer.  Partially because of the FML moments and partially because being in the water just seems so right to me.  I ended up doing 1000 yards like 6 minutes faster than I ever had before.  I think it had to do with the fact that I didn’t really let myself rest at all.  When I swim I feel like this;

But that’s just how I feel.  Bahaha anywho, I just thought I should let everyone know that because of swimming I’m madly in love with Michael Phelps.  True Life Fact: I have a future celebrity husband in every sport.  For swimming it is this lovely creature:
